Lowden State ParkNestled on the bluffs above the Rock River just north of Oregon, Lowden State Park is one of Northwest Illinois’ most scenic destinations. The park is best known for The Eternal Indian, more commonly called the Black Hawk Statue—a nearly 50-foot-tall concrete monument created by renowned sculptor Lorado Taft. Standing high above the river valley, the statue offers one of the most iconic views in Illinois and remains accessible to visitors despite ongoing preservation work. Major restoration of the landmark was completed in 2020, allowing visitors to once again experience the monument up close. Beyond the statue, Lowden State Park offers hiking trails, scenic overlooks, picnicking areas, camping, fishing, boating access, and abundant opportunities for wildlife viewing. Lowden State Park Boat LaunchLowden State Park’s public boat ramp and docks provide Rock River access one mile north of Oregon on Illinois Route 2, across the river from the main park. The launch serves motorboats, fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks; swimming is not permitted. Anglers may find bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, northern pike, walleye, bullhead, carp, sucker, and freshwater drum. Check current park conditions before visiting.
Lowden-Miller State ForestLowden-Miller State Forest protects 2,291 acres of hardwood and pine forest along 3.5 miles of the Rock River south of Oregon. Six public parking areas provide access to about 22 miles of maintained trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, designated equestrian routes, and a 1.5-mile self-guided nature trail. Deer, squirrel, and turkey hunting are permitted under current regulations. Trails close briefly during firearm seasons, so check Illinois DNR notices before visiting.
Lowell ParkLowell Park, the National Register of Historic Places, spans 240 acres along the Rock River and features the Ruth Edwards Nature Center, restrooms, parking, boat launches with Rock River access, fishing, hiking trails, a nature preserve, cross-country skiing, shelters, grills, playground equipment, and more. Ronald Reagan saved 77 lives here as a lifeguard during his boyhood years. Until you have walked through this nature wonderland, you will not appreciate this wonderful gift that was presented to the City of Dixon near the turn of the 19th century. Established in 1907, it has stood the test of time as a place where people could relax and enjoy recreation to the fullest. History Fun Fact: It is where Ronald Reagan took a summer job as a lifeguard and reportedly saved 77 people from the river during his tenure.
Lowell Parkway TrailLowell Parkway Trail is a 3-mile paved rail-trail linking Dixon’s Washington Avenue area with Lowell Park. Built on the former Illinois Central rail bed, the route opened in 1992 and provides a scenic, mostly separated path for walking and bicycling. Park at the southern trailhead off Washington Avenue or at the north end inside Lowell Park, where visitors can continue to woodland trails, picnic areas, fishing, playgrounds, and Rock River access.
Lyle Kunde Recreation Area / Lake SuleLyle Kunde Recreation Area is a 90-acre public park centered on 77-acre Lake Sule on Rochelle’s southeast side. The Flagg-Rochelle Park District site offers a boat launch, fishing, picnic and barbecue areas, shelters, restrooms, parking, and a memorial shade structure overlooking the water. Small boats and electric motors are suited to the lake, and anglers pursue bass, muskie, bluegill, saugeye, and catfish. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
M.C. ParkM.C. Park is Monroe Center’s community recreation space, maintained with local volunteer support. The park has two baseball and softball diamonds, an updated playground with swings, a pavilion, picnic space, and grills. It is a simple family-friendly stop for ball games, playtime, cookouts, and neighborhood gatherings just south of the active railroad tracks.

Meadows ParkMeadows Park is a 567-acre Dixon Park District recreation area stretching from Washington Avenue toward the Rock River. Its trails support hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and seasonal nature exploration, while the park also serves local soccer programs. Families can visit Wooden Wonderland playground and the adjacent accessible Water Wonderland splash pad with 23 water features, picnic space, pavilion, restrooms, and paved parking.
Miller's Hollow PierMiller’s Hollow Piers sits in the Pool 13 backwaters of the Mississippi River in Carroll County, Illinois, just north of Savanna and adjacent to Mississippi Palisades State Park. This small, low‑key site provides access to calm backwaters near Buffalo Lake, making it a convenient spot for anglers and paddlers looking for a quieter alternative to busy boat launches. The area is known for good fishing opportunities along this stretch of the Mississippi, with common targets including bass, catfish, panfish, and seasonal river species. Visitors also come simply to enjoy the river scenery, watch wildlife moving through the refuge corridor, and use the site as a quick pull‑off while exploring the Palisades bluffs and nearby river towns
Mix ParkMix Park is a 2.5-acre Oregon Park District site with a playground, pickleball courts, picnic tables, a shelter, and seasonal restrooms. Donated to the City of Oregon in 1920 and renovated in 2001, the award-winning park also features public art, including Lorado Taft's “Boys with Fish” sculpture and Jeff Adams's “Paths of Conviction, Footsteps of Fate.”

Morrison Sports ComplexMorrison Sports Complex is a 35-acre public multi-field park on the east edge of Morrison. The facility includes four softball and Little League diamonds, one baseball diamond, a football and soccer field, picnic shelters, and a half-mile perimeter walking path. A jumping pillow was added in 2025. Local and travel teams use the complex for practices, competitions, clinics, and tournaments, and individual fields or the full complex may be reserved for organized events.
Morrison-Rockwood Recreational TrailThe Morrison-Rockwood Recreational Trail is the first phase of a community-supported route planned to connect Morrison with Morrison-Rockwood State Park. The existing section begins near the Norrish Road covered bridge and extends toward Crosby and Damen roads, offering a quiet outdoor route for walking and bicycling. The Friends of the Parks Foundation supports this trail and other recreation, park, and nature projects in the Morrison area.
