Follow the Great River Road beneath the Mississippi bluffs, hike the ravines at Mississippi Palisades, or trace the Rock River through Castle Rock, Lowden, and White Pines. Franklin Creek brings springs, woodland, and historic stonework into the same day, while Nachusa Grasslands protects a vast sweep of restored prairie where bison again shape the land.

The region supports hiking, cycling, horseback riding, fishing, paddling, boating, golf, disc golf, camping, and birdwatching. In winter, snow can open the door to cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails, while bald eagles gather along open stretches of the Mississippi and Rock rivers.
Take the Scenic Way
The Great River Road through Carroll and Whiteside counties is more than a route between stops. Limestone bluffs, backwater wetlands, river towns, and working farmland make the drive part of the day. Pull over at signed overlooks, respect protected habitat, and give yourself permission to change the plan when a trail or view catches your attention.
