Arriving by Car
I-88 is the main east–west approach through the Sauk Valley, while I-39 connects the region north and south near Rochelle. I-80 passes south of the four counties and links to local highways for travelers arriving from the Quad Cities or farther west. Once you leave the interstate, Illinois routes 2, 26, 40, 64, 72, 78, and 84 connect the river towns, county seats, parks, and scenic byways.
Cell service can become intermittent on rural roads. Download directions before leaving town, keep an eye on fuel, and remember that the best route is not always the fastest one.

Train and Rental Car
Amtrak’s Mendota station is the closest passenger-rail stop for much of the southern part of the region. Service and schedules change, and a car is still the most practical way to explore the four counties, so arrange a rental or pickup before arrival. Major rental companies operate at regional airports and in larger nearby communities.
