Byron Forest Preserve DistrictThe Byron Forest Preserve District offers more than 2,000 acres of prairies, woodlands, wetlands, and scenic open spaces across multiple preserves in Ogle County. Visitors can explore miles of hiking trails, enjoy wildlife viewing, picnic in natural settings, and experience outdoor recreation throughout the year. The district's mission centers on preservation, education, and recreation, making it a destination for both outdoor enthusiasts and families. The district's flagship facility, the Jarrett Prairie Center, features a free natural history museum with interactive exhibits, an immersive theater, and panoramic prairie views. Visitors can also step back in time at the Heritage Farm Museum, which showcases life on a mid-1800s farm through restored buildings, antique equipment, and historical exhibits. Additional attractions include the J. Weiskopf Observatory, which offers free public sky-viewing programs; the PrairieView Golf Club, an 18-hole public championship golf course; and PrairieFire Golf & Grill, a year-round golf entertainment venue featuring Toptracer technology, dining, and family-friendly fun. Educational programs, seasonal events, and nature-based activities make the Byron Forest Preserve District a place to explore, learn, and connect with the outdoors in every season.
Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity PreserveThree miles southwest of Forreston, this daylight-hours preserve protects prairie, oak savanna, forest, sedge meadow, wetland, brook and creek habitats. More than 400 species have been documented, including over 150 bird and 170 plant species. Visitors may hike, watch birds, photograph nature and relax; dogs, horses, bikes and off-road vehicles are not allowed.
He-Leo Two Rivers PreserveHe-Leo Two Rivers Preserve is a scenic 48-acre Byron Forest Preserve District property where the Rock and Leaf rivers meet. Explore prairie, woodland, wetland, and floodplain habitat on foot, fish from the accessible riverfront, or launch a canoe or kayak from the non-motorized launch. Amenities include floating docks, a fishing pier, picnic shelter and tables, charcoal grill, sand volleyball, and portable toilets. Leashed dogs are welcome.
Howard Colman Hall Creek PreserveHoward Colman Hall Creek Preserve protects 321 acres of oak-hickory woodland, oak savanna, prairie, limestone dells, and the winding Hall Creek. Explore 7.5 miles of scenic trails on the Bridge, Bluff, and Hall Creek loops while watching for spring wildflowers, warblers, woodpeckers, kingfishers, herons, and other rare plants and wildlife. Dogs are not allowed in this sensitive nature preserve.
Jarrett Prairie Nature PreserveJarrett Prairie Nature Preserve protects 440 acres of rolling dolomite tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and woodland. Explore 9.5 miles of mowed trails, visit the free Jarrett Prairie Center museum, watch the night sky at Weiskopf Observatory, or enjoy picnic shelters, a playground, and winter sledding. Dogs are not allowed inside the nature preserve; leashed dogs may use the Don Hamer Recreation Path.
Stephen and Deirdre Nardi Equine Prairie PreserveByron Forest Preserve District prairie and oak savanna preserve with 10 miles of scenic trails for hiking, walking, jogging and nature exploration. It is the district's only preserve that permits horseback riding; riders must bring their own horses.
