A Two-Day Chocolate Trail Through Northwest Illinois

Food & Drink

The original chocolate itinerary was a list of stops; this rebuilt version is a flexible two-day route, with enough breathing room to shop, walk the riverfront, and save dessert for dessert.

Day One — Oregon to Dixon

Begin at Conover Square in Oregon. The former Schiller Piano factory now holds two floors of independent shops, the kind of place where vintage finds, gifts, art, and a coffee break can easily occupy a whole morning. Make room for one chocolate stop rather than trying to sample everything at once; this route has a second day.

Continue south on Illinois Route 2 as it follows the Rock River toward Dixon. Check in, then leave the car for a walk through the historic downtown and riverfront. Choose dinner from the local directory and finish with a bakery case, ice-cream counter, or chocolate dessert that sounds worth returning for.

Day Two — Shops, Pines, and a Matinee

Spend the morning exploring Dixon’s independent shops and cafés before driving north to White Pines near Mount Morris. The lodge’s rustic setting and seasonal matinee productions make lunch feel like an event instead of a fuel stop. Performance calendars and meal packages change, so reserve ahead.

If time allows, finish in Rochelle with a final coffee, confectionery, or gift-shop stop before turning home. The particular businesses on a sweets trail will change; the durable idea is to pair locally made treats with the downtowns and landscapes between them.

Plan the Route

Verify shop hours before leaving — many small businesses close one or two weekdays — and book theater tickets, lodging, and any special packages in advance. Bring a cooler in warm weather, split rich desserts, and let the Rock River drive be part of the trip.
