The four counties keep their biggest holiday traditions on nearly the same calendar page — the last Friday of November through the first weekend of December — so a single December visit can catch nearly all of them.
Northwest Illinois does not do one big regional Christmas event — it does four small, specific ones, in four small downtowns, all inside about ten days. None of them require advance tickets, most of them are free, and between them they cover almost everything a small-town holiday season is supposed to look like: a tree lighting, a house tour, a costumed village and a museum full of decorated trees.
The Savanna Museum and Cultural Center hosts the Savanna Festival of Trees on the Friday after Thanksgiving, filling its galleries with some fifty decorated trees. It is timed deliberately to open on the same weekend as Savanna’s own Christmas Walk, so a visit here doubles as a first look at the museum’s Civil War gallery and model railroad before the holiday crowds arrive elsewhere in the region.
A week and a half later, Mount Carroll runs its Christmas Walk & House Tour Weekend around the Carroll County Courthouse square — Santa appears at the district library, the town lights a community tree on the courthouse lawn, and a tour of decorated homes runs alongside an indoor holiday market. The courthouse itself, built in 1858 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is worth the walk around any time of year; in December it is doing double duty as the literal center of the celebration, with its Civil War monument and lawn cannons dusted in whatever the weather brings.
The same first Friday in December, downtown Sterling runs Sights & Sounds Holiday Kickoff and Tree Lighting — Santa’s arrival, a tree lighting at Library Plaza at 5:30pm, horse-and-carriage rides, live entertainment and stores open late for the evening. It is organized in the spirit of Sterling Main Street, the downtown revitalization group that has been promoting the historic district since its 1999 founding and its 2009 Illinois Main Street accreditation — the same organization behind the murals and preserved storefronts that make the district worth walking through even without an event on the calendar.
The following day, Wierenga’s Heritage Canyon in Fulton hosts Christmas in the Canyon. Heritage Canyon’s dozen wooded acres of recreated 1800s village — a one-room schoolhouse, a church, a blacksmith shop, a doctor’s office and log cabins strung along quiet trails — normally closes for the season by fall, which makes this one December afternoon worth planning around rather than assuming you can drop in on any given weekend. Costumed reenactors fill the buildings, carols are sung in the log church, the blacksmith works his forge, and Santa holds court in the ironworks shop while the paths are lit by lantern into the evening. Warm up afterward with pastries and coffee a few blocks away at Krumpets Restaurant & Bakery, open six days a week for breakfast and lunch near Fulton’s levee.

Because all four events fall within about ten days of each other — Savanna the Friday after Thanksgiving, Mount Carroll and Sterling on the same first Friday of December, Fulton the day after — the realistic way to catch more than one is to pick a single December weekend and commit to it rather than trying to string all four together in one day. Sterling and Fulton pair especially well on a single Friday-into-Saturday, with Krumpets or one of the Sauk Valley’s own bakeries covering the drive in between.
