The road to Deitrick’s Alpaca Ranch runs through the farm country outside Prophetstown, and the welcome feels less like arriving at an attraction than being invited onto the family farm.
A Social Herd
Deitrick’s began with a small group of Huacaya alpacas and grew into a working herd selected for both show quality and fiber. Alpacas are gentle, curious, highly social animals, and each carries a distinct expression and temperament. Their natural colors range much more widely than first-time visitors often expect.
During an arranged visit, guests may see how the herd is grouped and cared for, learn what makes Huacaya fleece so soft and warm, and — when the ranch allows it — feed animals by hand. Calm voices and directions from the handlers matter; the visit works because it happens on the animals’ terms.
From Fleece to Gift Shop
Annual shearing supplies fiber for hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, and other goods. Personalized tags can connect a finished item to the alpaca that produced the fleece, turning a warm souvenir into a small piece of the ranch’s story.
Arrange a Visit
The ranch is not a drop-in petting zoo. Tours, open houses, school visits, and seasonal programs vary, so contact Deitrick’s directly before driving out. Wear closed-toe shoes, expect a real farm, and leave time to explore Prophetstown and the nearby Hennepin Canal.
